DREAMSCAPES

Sub Rosa
2026

Oil on canvas
30” x 48”

  • ‘Sub Rosa’ is a term for secrecy and silence. Ocelots move silently through roses as hidden danger is revealed with a snake coiled in the foreground. A solar eclipse creates ambiguity as moths seek light.

Serenity Prayer 2025
2025

Acrylic on canvas
48” x 48”

  • Life sized self portrait with my grandmother’s well worn quilt, made from fabric scraps from her clothing. Painted around the presidential inauguration in January 2025. A black void serves as the background signifying an unsettling and unknown future; the figure, surrounded by sculptural monochromatic waves of quilt fabric, clings to the security of her own strength.

    “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change;

    Courage to change the things I can;

And the wisdom to know the difference.”

Belle Maison (Beautiful Home)
2024

Acrylic on canvas
30” x 40”

  • I grew up in a neighborhood surrounded by woods, with street names that romanticized those woods. Names like “Dawn Mist”, “Fawn Trail”, “Enchanted Timbers”. I used to imagine that forest when I was a kid. The last time I went back to my childhood home, on the outskirts of Houston,  the landscape that shaped much of my childhood had been clear cut and developed. This painting is how I saw it all as a child. The wolf is a memory of my first dog, Belle, leash free escorting me though the neighborhood. I read that wolves were last seen in that part of Texas around 1970 which is close to when little neighborhoods like mine started taking over.

Contentment
2023

Acrylic on canvas
30” x 40”

  • The juxtaposition of my 5 year old self and the rabbit represents my temptation to speed forward, acting without thought to consequence or long term goals. This composition captures both subjects in a moment of stillness, which is what I have given myself, since childhood, when I take time to quiet my mind and create. Wildflowers include firewheel, purple horsemint, and prairie coneflower which are still blooming in Austin every spring; one of the very few constants in our rapidly changing city.

Bittersweet
2024

Acrylic on canvas
24” x 24”

  • An exploration of vulnerability through texture and color. A Pandora’s Box that cannot be resealed after opening.

Take Warning
2026

Oil on canvas
30” x 48”

  • A war horse confronts the viewer from a field of giant sunflowers going to seed. Female grackles scream as their male counterparts silently take flight under an ominous red dawn.

Sleeping Beauty
2023

Acrylic on canvas
30” x 40”

  • A dreamscape composition capturing my nostalgia for my 1980’s childhood inspired by story book illustration, 80’s fashion, and my fascination with the dark feminine.  Under a full moon, lightning bugs flicker as a grackle and raven hunt among briar rose vines near the tower where a cursed princess sleeps. When I was asked as a child what I wanted to do when I grew up, I often answered that I wanted to be a painter. This was the type of painting I longed to create back then. I think of it as a gift to my child- self.

False Abundance
2023

Acrylic on canvas
24” x 24”

  • A statement about sustainability. Painted during a profound drought where the natural world suffered to a breaking point while summer in the suburbs continued as usual with green lawns and fresh melons.

Nine of Cups
2023

Acrylic on canvas
24” x 36”

  • A birthday wish for myself in the fall of 2023. Exploring the power of wishing letting go of expectations for how a wish might come true.

“I sing because I'm happy I sing because I'm free … His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me”

Abundance
2023

Acrylic on canvas
24” x 24”

  • Cabbage and kale, both symbols of abundance, rest on rich dark earth crawling with life.
